Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend - "A Beloved Community"
All of Martin Luther King, Jr’s campaigns shared his unique and unchanging vision for the world. Repeatedly, he spoke of triumphing over oppression and uniting humankind as one family. He referred to this communal ideal by many names, but most enduringly as the Beloved Community.
The digital exhibition We Share the Dream: King’s Beloved Community examines this ideal. Dr. King’s call to understand “the unity of all mankind” was, and remains, a beacon to all who follow his charge to “take the freedom struggle into every community…without exception.” The American Civil Rights Movement built alliances among grassroots organizations. Together, they staged mass protests and demanded equality. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Women’s Liberation, Gay Rights, and Labor Movements advocates embraced these ideas and methods.
